Have a 1950 WD with really rotten wiring. It's all there, but is literally rotting apart (all green and nasty with the wire covering rotting away and the wire all copperized - is that a word? - and cracking, etc.) Is relacing the wiring and easy task? Can I simply use modern commercial wire of the correct gauge to replace it? (I'm not worried about a perfect restoration - this tractor is for work)? Would bad wires keep it from starting (I'm having trouble getting proper ignition)?

Thanks!

PS: already replace the battery terminal wires. All the rest are still pretty yucky.

I have a 53 WD and I need a complete wiring harness. I also need a 3 pos. light switch and a key starter switch. I read a posting of yours and you said you had wiring harnesses. Do you have one that fits my description?

Why go to all of the trouble? I got a brand new from the factory AGCO wiring harness for $57 and it only took about 30 minutes to install it. It will take you 30 minutes just to gather up supplies to make your own.

Che, Rewiring is relatively easy, but it would sure help if you had 1) A Wirign Diagram and 2) A new Wiring Harness if ones available for your tractor. Other then that, a roll of 12 Gauge insulated stranded copper wire and a roll of 14 Gauge would suffice, other then the battery cables, of course. If you want to do a bang up job if a wiring harness is unavailable, you might use red and black wire and maybe some of that plastic coil wire loom plus I like to BOTH solder and crimp the terminal ends and then use heat shrink tubing over them. I prefer 00 Gauge on 6 volt and 0 on 12 volt for easier starting.

Good luck, dont get your wires crossed now !!!!

The green stuff that you describe is oxidation - the combination of copper and oxygen. There are a couple of different oxidations of copper. The green one is most common. There is also a black oxide. Color varies with the number of oxygen atoms that combine with the copper atoms.

Current wire will work just fine. Once you get it laid out, you can use electrical tape to dress it up some.

Bad wiring can cause problems. Shorts or opens can cause loss of ignition. Most shorts usually end up being opens in short order.
