Well after much reading and some posting on this website about various tractors I found a dandy D17 today and bought it. It has a 3 pt, wide front end, power steering and all. Going to be running a square baler with it in the future. The tin is very straight on it and the paint is an older paint job just a tad faded. Not sure what year or series it is but I have a feeling someone will be able tell me with a serial number and what the differences in each are. It came with a 3 bottom plow which I have no idea what I will do with. I test drove it and ran it in all of the gears down hill and up hill and it seemed fine. It has had a recent valve job, rebuilt carb and complete tune up. hopefully it will be a good little tractor and serve me many trouble free years.

well I got it home tonight and wouldn't ya know it flooded the carb and the battery is dead! Gonna hook up the battery charger tomorrow morning and let it trickle charge all day and when I get home from work I'm going joy riding! May even take it up the road and back. Yeeee haw I can't wait to start making some bales next year!

Adding hydraulics to the bucket is easier than I expected. I don't have a loader on my D-17. I did add hydraulics to the bucket on my Ford 901. And I've got most of the stuff to add hydraulics to the bucket on my Massey 44 Special. Don't really need two all hydraulic buckets. But I acquired all the parts so I'm going to convert the Massey as well. I'm doing a bucket on a Ford 9N for a neighbor right now. Total hours to convert about 8. Total cost is high - about $300 with new cylinders and hoses.

I'm pretty excited about it as you can tell. I have a Farmall C which my wifes grandfather bought new in 1951 and it's used often to haul hay and manure and such. Its a dandy little tractor, very tight. The only problem is it does not have a 3pt and is to small for running a baler. I plan on useing it to run a rake with during hay season and mow and bale with the D17. I've had several old tractors but none of them really fit the bill. I really like this D17 seems very operator friendly. I'm as excited as a kid in a candy store about the "new" tractor!! I'm sure I will have a ton of questions about it. I am hoping to get it home sometime in the next 2 days.

One other question. How difficult will it be to find an all hydraulic loader for it?

The number 17 loader appeared to be identical to the tube loader for the WD, I couldn't tell the difference. I have the number 14 version. It's pretty light and is really just a manure mover. I'm pretty sure they made an industrial for it and that would be what you want. Maybe someone has the model number to look for.

I have a D17SerIV with a Freeman 180 trip-bucket loader which I am restoring.
I'd like to make the bucket hydraulic, which may takes some time and doing.
Here's a pic of it before I started tearing everything apart.

I'm curious about the side frame on the bucket- or the lack of it-? no side frame? never saw one like that- seems like you would miss a good part of the load. Regarding making the bucket hydraulic- easy to do with some new mounts on each end of trhe cylinder. Big thing is to add the independent hydraulic system with the independent drive- aka front mount pump, etc-but well worth it.

That's a beauty. What's the model on the loader! I was thinking of the dual round tube on the number 14 and 17. That's a lot more skookum but I notice it's still a single ram up front. The frame looks more like the industrial.

rngr,
congrats on a good purchase.
If you want to know about it, just look up the S/N on the "Research and Info" column at the left of this site.
Or, you can ask questions and I'm sure anybody will oblige.

One of the best tractors AC made.....I'm sure you will love it. I've got a '58 gas and a '59 diesel. S/N is stamped on the LH side of the torque tube where it bolts up to the engine.

Very jealous. It sounds fantastic. Having used a D14 for years, I always have wanted one. The only one in the area has a tree growing through it and the owner still is holding out for 4200. Congrats!
