I ahve a D15 jumps out of 3rd gear I hear this is common on a tractor that ahs been used in its day I dosent make noise in any gear it just jumps out is this a dificult fix ? I have had tractors split before JD A farmall 400 the jd i didn't have to split but replaced gears in transmision. any real difference?

WORN SHIFT COLLARS, AND SHIFT FORKS DO THIS. If you take the side plate off, you will be able to see these items. as the shift related parts wear, the tips of the gear/collar splines where they first mesh get beat up. This means that the shift collar has to slide further down the 3rd gear splines to stay put. Problem is worn collars and forks cause the the collar to be pushed "less far" down 3rd gear. You may be able to weld some metal onto the 3rd gears shift fork to compensate for the wear. Otherwise, tranny has to come apart. I would try to guage the total amount of wear on the shift forks and inside of shift collar and add that much to the 3rd gear side of the shift fork where it sits in the collar. This should fix it.

Thanks I will try that this is a restoration job in the future the rest of the tractor is perfect other than cosmetic I won't be doing much other than parades or an occasional wagon
