1 week today tractor quit while brush hogging. Checked battery. Switch, and plugs. Towed tractor short distance, started. Tried to trace wires to find short. Lights have never worked; had been disconnected years ago. Today had time to work on it again. The distributor was hot to the touch, no fire in battery. Any ideas?

I'm guessing you are saying all is well except the charging system has died or you've got short somewhere. I've rewired several B's and C's and it's pretty straight forward. If the wires are bad, just make a new harness. The Ammeter can cause an intermittant, chased that one for weeks once. Temporarily swap in a new toggle for on-off just to make sure you don't have a problem there.

Now if it's just dying after it runs for awhile that could be a marginal condenser but it sounds more like you are thinking a short.
