D17 brakes

I have a loader on my D17 and I was wondering if it is possible to replace the brakes without having to take the loader off? What would be the best way to go about this?

Can't answer the loader questions without seeing the loader. However, it probably will not interfer.

If you don't know where to start on the brakes, it is a very good idea to go to your local farm store or Ebay and buy an IT manual (AC-17). This is a pretty difficult job on most D-17 tractors owing to stuck bottom pins. You need to have diagrams and parts pictures to understand how it goes together. Even though I've done 30 or more brake jobs, I had my AC-17 out when I did the brakes on my Series II. The brakes are not the same on Series IV. The book covers it all. As an option, you could get the D-17 Allis Chalmers Repair manual from your AC dealer. It is your best source.

Thanks for the info. I will definetly get the manual you refer to. My D17 is a series III, and I did not know if you have to remove the axle housing tube to do the brake job. If I do not have to remove the axle housing, then I probably won't need to remove the loader.

Larry, if the pin at the bottom of the housing comes out, you won't need to remove the axel. If it doesn't come out, you may need the loader off just to get at this pin. If it won't budge, there are a lot of fixes - we all got our favorite method. Allis recommends drilling a hole in the center and tapping it. Others like to weld something on that can be pulled. I like to loosen the axel and shake it around. You will understand when you get the book or start to disassemble.

By the way, if you don't take the brakes out, you can't remove the axel without pulling the brake drum off the axel - and that is nearly impossible. Just make sure you can get at that pin.
