44Jim (or D17Jim), I assume the 44 refers to a Massey Harris 44. I used to have a 44. I traded it for a Minneapolis Moline G705 shortly after I bought a Massey Harris 44 Special. Sold the G705 but will not sell my 44 Special.

The price on the D-17 is super. You've lots of margin there to make it a great tractor and still not have more invested than it is worth. In 1994, I bought my 1960 D-17 diesel with an Allis backblade for $750. It didn't run very good, bad starter, bad generator, no PS, no brakes, no hydraulics, bad tires and hardly any paint. It cost me less than $400 to get everything field ready and lookin' good. I had to make a coupling for the PS pump. Engine had stuck valves - took a while to free them up. Still haven't broken into the engine but I do need a new rear engine seal. But it has become my second favorite tractor (behind the D-14). The D series have pushed the WD-45 aside because they are so easy to use. You'll get really attached to your D-17. Sounds like your engine problems can be fixed pretty easily. Good luck!!!!!

There is a lot of confusion and misunderstanding between people on the difference between live power (as in PTO and hydraulics) and independent power.

I believe the normal use of the two terms is as follows: LIVE power is when you can have power to the PTO and hydraulics anytime the engine is running, regardless of movement or nonmovement of the tractor and even while shifting. INDEPENDENT power is when you can have power to the PTO and hydraulics, independent of the main clutch to the transmission. AC accomplished independent power, first with the hand clutch on the WD, WD45 and CA and then with the power director on the D series tractors. The AC D-17 series 4 was the first with true LIVE power to the hydraulics. Certainly auxiliary hydraulic pumps could be added to models maybe as early as the WC that operated off the front of the crankshaft and required their own hydraulic reservoir. These gave add on LIVE hydraulics but were not factory standard equipment.

John- I don't mean to start a spitting contest, but the reason why so many people are confused is because of the misinformation they receive, like on this board, including from people like you. You have the situation bass ackwards. Live power means you can stop wheel motion without stopping the pto, even if it means you need to stop all motion to engage the pto. INDEPENDENT pto means you can start or stop the pto whenever the engine is running, no matter if the tractor is moving, in gear, etc. AC established LIVE power with the 1948 WC, then the CA with the hand clutch, WD45. D Series with the Power Director, which gave live power and high and low speeds in each forward and reverse gear. The Series IV D17 had INDEPENDENT hydralics as well. Independent is one development stage beyond live power, not the other way around. Live power does not mean yopu can push in the foot clutch and shift the tractor. That is independent.

The series IV had independent hydraulics with the pump mounted on the right side of the torque tube. Previous models had live hydraulics via the Power Director- ie- hand clutch. Live hydraulics means that you can operate the hydraulic system while stopping wheel motion of the tractor. Independent hydraulics means you can operate the hydraulic system whether the wheels are moving or not. Same definition regarding pto operation. Series 1-2-3 D17 had live hydraulics, Series 4 had independant.

Denny,

Welcome to the world of orange. Is the tractor a gas model, wide or narrow front? We have a '59 Diesel--still trying to get the lift to work properly but I think we're getting close thanks to some good advice from these guys and a few at the other site (unofficial AC). BTW, you'll need a shop manual if one didn't come with the purchase...

Congratulations on the recent purchase. Sounds like you got the tractor for a very good price. I bought a D17 and a loader about two years ago.
I haven't had much trouble with it although I did have to clean out the gas line and do the usual stuff--new plugs, points, etc.
Other than mine not having live power, I am pretty happy with it. Sounds like you know your way around with the tools and work for your project--Good Luck

D17 has live power via the Power Director- hand clutch. It does not have independent pto or hydraulic from the factory.
