I have a Model B that a young man in our FFA shop is working on for me. I purchased the tractor and it ran well. I put a load on the belt pulley and it started missing and died. I thought it was out of time so I had our FFA shop look at it.
They are baffleld. They rebuilt the carb, retimed the mag and it will run wide open for about 10 minutes then it dies. It will start right up but will then die right away again. Fuel tank looks clean, settlement bowl clean too. It does not want to idle down too well either. We are at wits end, any ideas?

one other thing you mite check is make sure gas tank is venting...take cap off and see if it still dies.

I do not have any solutions for you that the other Posters have not covered,however i will relate an experience my Neighbor had with a Farmall M.It would run well for awhile and then all of a sudden shut down completely. Eventually it was discovered that an Oat Seed was floating around in the Tank and occasionally would cover up the Fuel Drain Hole to the Sediment Bowl. When the engine stopped it would float off elsewhere only to eventually do the same cover up job again. Check the Tank for some obstruction floating around in it.

the not idling down part caught my eye...could have an intake leak on top of other probs or if the mag has an advance it is sticking...the dying part is fuel or fire...if you rule out fuel i'd say coil or condensor is breaking down when it heats up.

Bob,
If your B is equipped with a Fairbanks "J" series mag, the early series "J" mags had a tar taped coil in them. These were prone to leakage after they got old and would ground themselves out on the inside of the mag housing as the heat rose in the mag itself from engine heat. If it is in fact a "J" series mag, lift the lower cover and check what type of coil is in it. It just may have one of those old tar taped coils giving you fits'. If the coil looks red in color or a dark brown it probably has an upgraded epoxy coil which doesn't cause that same senario as much. We have mag parts in stock if ya need any. If it has the better coil, I would run over the fuel system top to bottom to make sure everything is okay especially fuel flow to the carb. Big culprit! HTH Good Luck!

Bob, Check for a nice blue spark from ignition system right after it dies. If no spark it could be the coil and or condenser. Also check kill wire and kill switch if it has that. Run stranded metallic core wire and non-resistor spark plugs on magneto ignition and not the carbon core wires. Are the plugs clean or are they fuel fouled or oil fouled.

After it dies open carb drain petcock or plug and check for fuel flow there. Could be something plugging fuel flow or needle seat hanging up, or float hanging up inside carb keeping needle stuck shut.

Bob--you didn't mention the condenser--did that get changed out or checked? Also could the coil in the mag be bad? You mentioned that the mag was retimed (but not rebuilt). Shutdowns like you describe sound like an ignition issue to me, but it still could be fuel-related.

To be sure--I would remove the fuel line at the carb and drain into a jar or bucket to verify that the carb is getting a solid flow from the tank and through the bowl. After verifying flow from tank, check float level & clear carb passages/jet.
