I HAVE D-14 IN WHICH I'M HAVING STARTER PROBLEMS. THE TRACTOR HAS BEEN CONVERTED TO 12 VOLT AND THE PROBLEM IS THAT WHEN I TRY TO START THE STARTER WILL NOT ENGAGE AND THEN WHEN YOU TRY TO START AGAIN IT WILL WORK JUST FINE. I HAVE LOOKED AT THE TEETH ON FLYWHEEL AND NONE OF THEN SHOW ANY UNUSUAL WEAR OR NONE OF THE TEETH ARE BROKEN. I HAVE HAD THE STARTER REBUILT AND IT IS IN GOOD SHAPE. THIS PROBLEM HAPPENS ABOUT 50% OF THE TIME AND IS A PAIN TO ME. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF ANY ONE HAS ANY GOOD IDEAS WHAT IS WRONG. STARTING JUST 50% IN MISSOURI.

Make sure that you have the starter that matches your ringgear. There are two different starters, two different starter drives and two ring gears with different tooth counts. One set is for 12 volt and one set for 6 volt. If the tractor has been converted, it could have a gear mismatch. Mine did, and believe me it won't last too long that way. Starter problems seem to be chronic with D-14s. Too bad because they're great little tractors. I sold mine and I wish I never had.

I just switched my D-14 to 12volt. The starter does the exact same thing. It won't hurt it and the starter should last a long time. If it really bothers you, you can get a 12 volt starter for the later model D-14, they converted around 59, that will solve your problem. If you do get a new starter, you can send me the old one :-) John

Hey, d-14 Dan:

I had the same problem with an older tractor (Delco-Remy starter). I ignored it for several months, 'cuz it would eventually start, but I fried out some internal parts because of a bad connection inside the starter. All I did was take it off (easier said than done) and replace the saddle switch, spray some WD 40 and add 2cc 30w oil in the hole, cleaned ALL of the connections from the battery to the top of the copper stud and it works EVERY time now. Also, the only ground my starter has is the set bolt that holds it in, so I was told to clean that, too. Good luck.
