D17 Rear Main Seal

Hello all,

My D17 is leaking oil pretty badly from the rear main seal. I was just wondering if anybody had any advice on replacing one. DO i have to split the tractor or can i get to it by droping the oil pan? It is a series one and has the gas engine. Thanks in advanced for your help.

Do a search in the archives here, maybe Rod from NH, WD45 rear seal. Used a wire and plastic strips to pull the new seal through. I saved pix of it.

Yes, you've got to split the tractor. Be sure you get the adhesive that is recommended when installing the new seal. I believe it is marketed by 3M. Take your time, do it right, and you will be pleased with the results. I know it is annoying and It is something that happens to these D17's. I did mine a couple of years ago, and I am happy to say it is still working great with no leaks. Don Holden

my manual says ya gotta pull motor,flywheel,etc...its 1 piece seal...lovely...just lovely...diesel same way
