Model M crank - any known source?? And is it safe

I have a 1940 Model M crawler that had a crank handle when I bought it. But I am unable to figure out what "safe" place I put it in. (Took it out of tractor so no one could steal the tractor) Anyone know where to buy one? And is it safe to use the darn thing or am I just asking for a broken arm or worse??

Aside from being cross wired or something the only way a motor can kick the crank is if the mag impulses before top dead center. The further before TDC the more likely it will kick back. No reason the fear the thing if cranked correctly and mag is set right. Lift crank handle with open hand until you fell compression, grab another notch and lift over one cylinder, that is the proper way to hand crank. Find timing marks (I have no idea where they are on a M) and mark TDC with chalk. With switch off, pull over slowly while someone watches for timing mark and listens for the impulse to click. Needs to click at or after TDC to be completely safe to hand crank.

So I guess the horror stories about accidnets when crank starting on the old cars must have been related to improperly advancing the spark. Thanks for the info, now if I can just find the crank or a replacement...

Help.Looking for a starter motor,6 or 12 volt.will adapt.Suit 1937 model m crawler.Poor health,unable to crank.Please would love to hear from someone.Even if i could just see one.
