I have a Model M that has a magneto in it with the following markings on it: - up near the top: "Fairbanks Morse Type FM" and then a smooth blank spot that looks like it was supposed to have something stamped into it
- farther down: "OH4B3A"
- farther down: "A975004"

What model FM magneto is this??

Ralph,

If your magneto has a one piece cap, that is known as a model "4B" or "K" series mag. The "FM" in front signafies "Fairbanks Morse". The "3" is the customer code for Fairbanks which is Allis-Chalmers, and the "A" means the grounding lug is located on the engine side of the mag housing. All those numbers do mean something as you can see. If you need parts, service, or info, drop us a line or give us a call, be glad to help you out....

Any way for me to tell if it's CW or CCW without pulling the unit off? When I look at the engine from the right side the mag has the plug wires to the back (or left) and the driving gear toward the front (right)

Wow! Thanks so much. I'll try to get digital photos next week and send them. Do you think that was OH in front of the 4B3A or might it be something else? I'll work on getting a better view and hopefully those photos. Thanks again

I belive you have al the info you need, has a one piece cap right? That type of magneto started out as type FM, then modified to FM suffix B (FMB) all the way to X.

Yes, a one piece cap. I should have also said it's a 4 cylinder, but I guess that's obvious for a Model M. Anyway, I had not found reference online to a model FM, Only FM following by some suffix.

I should have said previously this is a 1940 tractor as far as I know and I have no manuals (ordered some yesterday) As i said in the immediately preceding post I thought the magneto models had suffixes and was confused what one I actually had.

Were you saying there was actually a model FM (no sufix) that started it all? Are the suffix models interchangeable?

I went to an old fashioned truck and auto electrical shop today. He has info on these magnetos and can obtain parts. But he wanted to have the magneto in hand and I'm afraid to take it off the tractor and maybe never get it back on right! He went on to say that in his opinion if the tractor runs, don't mess with the mag. I had thought I should maybe replace the points and/or condenser - but for now I'll let my fear preside I guess. If the thing starts to misbehave I may have to take it off (gulp) and bring it to him (the tractor is 125 miles from my primary home)
