I have a Model M which has a Positive Ground 12 volt starter - is this standard? Does anyone know if the starter can be converted to Negative ground? The starter says "Autolite MAB4046" on the tag.

OK, so polarity shouldn't be a problem. I'll ask the rebuild guy I'm taking it ot whether it is 12 volt - I don't like the idea of running a 6 volt one on 12 volts if I can help it.

This tractor has no real working charging system and the reason I'd like to go negative ground is the better availability of negative ground components to build a full electrical system myself to include generator or alternator, lights, kill switch, strart switch, etc.

Thanks for any and all input/comment - I'm really new at this...

Was positve ground originaly however 6-volt. To convert change battery cables to neg ground, Starter doesn't know differance however charging system does know and needs to be re polorized and likely change regulator or cutout.

Ralph, Assuming that starter is a tractor starter and NOT a small permanent magnet lawn or garden tractor smaller type starter..... ..... That starter will still turn the same direction REGARDLESS of Pos or Neg grounding and will still work. Often when people convert from 6 to 12 volts they use the same starter and they just spin faster HOWEVER thats NOT the best thing to do cuz they have such a strong starting kick/torque it can be a lil tough on starter drives or teeth. Still, Ive never changed them, just used 12 on 6.

Thanks for the input. I took the starter to an old fashioned truck and auto electrical shop today. He verified that the Autolite was a 6 volt starter, and as you said polarity won't change the direction of the rotation, since it is not a permanent magnet starter. I had already planned on having him rebuild the starter and it turns out for the same price ($175) he will put in a 12 volt coil - so I get the conversion to 12 volt at the same time!! This guy has been in the biz for over 30 years and had info on both my starter and my magneto and can obtain parts for either. I'm extremely happy to have found him. In 3 days I'll have a like-new starter, new bearings, new brushes, and converted to 12 volts!

NOW YOU WILL HAVE TO BUY A 12VOLT ALTERNATOR, MAKE NEW MOUNTING BRACKETS AND CHANGE WIRING. BETTER TO CLEAN THE RUST AND LEAVE IT 6 VOLTS. WORKED FINE FOR 60 YEARS. BOB

Well, you see the problem is that there is NO wiring. There is also no charging system. So trying to use the darn thing has been awkward at best. I believe I already have a 12 volt generator that fits in the bracket for the old one that does nothing now. So I hope to be close to the mark. Then I can have a working tractor with reliable starting. I've owned it for 20 years probably and been unable to use it for most of that time.

I hope I didn't write something that angered you (the all caps response), if so apology offered...
