ok yall,i found it... in reply to BCnT, 10-01-2005 10:49:21
looks to be 2 studs pointing down, both have nuts on them...the one in the back has a #6 or 8 ga wire on it that disapears back under fuel tank...it looks like the manifold elbow splits right above heater so i guess 2 bolts and it falls off? i didnt have battery in tractor so i couldnt test it today...is this a pretty commonly replaced part and is it available anywhere or should i start searching bone yards?
thanx

ps:Gatz i think i can track wiring without schematic...thanx for offer...and Kent...my mistake...i meant butterfly like in exhaust manifold to warm intake on gas 6 cylinders...i havent gotten greasy enuff to have photogaphic memory on this beast yet ;)

As Kent said, there's a heating element in the intake manifold.
It has a terminal just to the right of that large plug and points towards the front of the engine. The button on the dash engages a solenoid which connects a heavy gauge wire to the element. (The solenoid is similar if not the same as the starter's)
If the large plug that's chained onto the manifold is removed, you'd be looking right at it.
If you want, I can take some pics of it and the hole that it fits in as mine is apart right now.

OOps, think I got something backwards...

The heater solenoid is activated by the right-most postion of the key switch; the starter is activated by the small button.

Double oops...
It depends on which series of D17 you have as to what engages the starter and what engages the heater.
If you have IT's AC-201 shop manual, they show the circuit for all the series. If not, I can scan the page.

This engine uses a heater in the intake manifold to heat the intake air as a winter starting aid. You would have to modify the head to install glow plugs.

where in the manifold should heater be? theres a large round plug with a chain attached that i assumed was a butterfly valve to warm intake air after engine was running...i have noticed ignition switch activates a relay or something when turned all the way clockwise but i havent been able to locate the click and i see no wires or terminals on intake...theres a brass piece in top of water manifold that i figured was remains of temperature sending unit.
i cant find mention of heater in repop factory service manual or IT version.
thanx

The should not be a butterfly valve in the intake manifold of a diesel. I DO NOT have a diesel 262. I would have to look at Dad's engine owners manuel we have for our Gleaner C-II. The follow on 190, 301 deisel has the intake heater right under where the intake pipe from the air cleaner connects.
