I HAVE A D-14 WITH SOME STATER PROBLEMS! THE TRACTOR HAS BEEN CONVERTED TO A 12-VOLT SYSTEM, AND IT STILL HAS THE ORGINAL 6 VOLT STARTER. I HAVE HAD THE STARTER REBUILT AND THE PROBLEM IS THIS. SOMETIMES WHEN I TRY TO START THE TRACTOR THE STARTER WILL JUST SPIN AND NOT INGAGE, THEN WHEN I TRY AGAIN IT WILL ENGAGE AND IT WILL START FINE. THIS HAPPENS ABOUT 50% OF THE TIME. I HAVE LOOKED AT THE FLY WHEEL TEETH AND THEY DO NOT SHOW ANY ABNORMAL WEAR OR HAVE ANY BROKEN TEETH OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. SO IF ANYBODY HAS ANY SUGGESTIONS, I WOULD BE OPEN TO HERE FROM YOU. PUZZLEED IN MISSOURI!

Jackson is correct it sounds like the bendix. Since your tractor has been converted to 12 volt you can replace the 6v starter with a D15 12v starter once your old 6v peters out. But I would milk the old one as long a I could. Good Luck!
