I have an Allis Chalmers B with a crank start and have been doing some engine work on it and i took the distributor off and all the spark plug wires and I forgot to mark everything. but i've tried every possible firing order, I know it goes 1,2,4,3 and 1 is closest to the front and theres plenty of gas on the spark plug and it's getting a good spark but ive been cranking on that thing for days and nothing not even like it wants to try starting,

I had similar problem and was accidentally timed to the exhaust stroke rather than compression stroke.

Since you have a hand crank B I would have to assume that what you are referring to as a distributor is actualy a magneto? if so timing it is a bit different (easier) than explained below. Might as well remove it and start over. Remove all the plugs so it is easy to crankover. Have a buddy crank slow and stick your finger in #1 hole. When you feel compression stop then look at the mag drive and continue to turn until the slots are straight across or at 3 and 9 oclock. Should not be very far to turn after you feel compression, less than 1/4 turn. Remove the small cap from your mag and turn the magneto backwards, left or counter clockwise until the rotor is pointed to the upper left, about 10 oclock. If you come up against the impulse you are going the wrong way. The drive lugs on the mag will be close to straight across. Turn slightly until they will engauge the drive. Install mag in the middle of the slots and snug. #1 wire goes top inside hole. Follow to the right in the firing order. To make sure you wont get kicked by the crank look in the timing hole and turn the crank past first click of impulse and stop right when clicks the second time. You should see TDC mark in the timing window. If it is before you need to retard the mag some until in the middle of the widow or after when it clicks then tighten the mag. Every other click the mark will be near the window, one time #1 next time #4, makes no differance for checking time. Do not time a B running to the FIRE mark irregardless of where the impulse clicks if you value your arms and fingers. It will kick back if it impulses before TDC when hand cranking but will run fine a bit retarded if needed.

Butch has the plan. there is a 1 inch hole in the left side of the flywheel housing between the two implement mounting bolts. look for TDC as he said. when it starts, it will then fire at the FIRE mark if you are using a timing light

Key to your post is "took the distributor off".....Upon reinstalling, being just one cog off on the gear is a problem. Plug wires are not a big deal- it's the camshaft/distributor alignment that counts. Plug wires work by rotation- no matter where they start at- so foillow the recommendation of the other poster to get things back on track. If by "engine work" you mean you moved the crank/camshaft gear relationship...more problems.

its out of time... in reply to Mikey Dogg, 09-30-2005 09:19:45
i'm not familar with the B but this will work on ALL gas engines with a distributor.
pull #1 spark plug...stick your finger loosely in plug hole...bump motor over till compression blows your finger out...then put something in spark plug hole that touches piston [stick, screw driver,etc]...using fan blade as a handle...slowly turn engine over till stick stops moving up or down...thats TDC or top dead center...pull distributor cap and take note of where outer tip of rotor is...align with pole on distributor cap and thats #1...remove stick or screw driver from plug hole and spin engine over with starter and see which way distributor spins...starting with #1 plug wire which should already be located in cap install rest of the wires in same direction as distr turned in the correct firing order...it should be close enuff to start now...you may have to turn distr a little to get it to start...thats all there is to it...adjust timing to specs and your done.
