I bought a AC Model M crawler that had a Butane tank on it. The guy that sold it to me said this was used by an asparagus farmer previous to him. He also told me that it would run on propane - which it does! Was this an AC option, or did the farmer do a conversion? Also, this has a positive ground starter, was that normal? Once I figure out what the serial number is I plan on ordering manuals and wonder if these "features" will be in those books.....

Allis-Chalmers use positive ground will into the 12 volt era. I think they only went to negative ground when they started using alternators. The LP set-up may be stock. I have a mid 60's Gleaner C-II that is LP. Look the fuel system over. Does it look "Factory" or does it look retrofitted.

the reason it runs on propane is basically the 2 gasses are the same...propane burns a little hotter.
also butane isnt as readily available as propane these days...the only thing that need to be changed is a jet which the local propane dealer prob had and installed.

as far as positive ground,i'd say 50% or more of everything made before the '60's was positive ground so it wouldnt be abnormal

When you mention the positive ground age it rings a bell. But my old Ford was Positive Ground SIX volt. This tractor is 12 volt. Was that common then? Thanks for any and all info!

I don't know that the previous owner made any changes for propane, I think it just works. Actually, Propane works better than Butane in the Winter as far as I know and since I'm at 4000' in the mountains that is especially of value to me. Would burning hotter mean I should worry about the valves, especially exhaust??

propane is a cleaner fuel than butane and has more complete combustion but i dont think it'll be any worse on valves than butane...neither fuel has any lubricating properties...i'd run some top end lubricant [marvel,etc.] in crankcase to help prolong valve life.

btw...to clarify my other post...every major tractor maker back then had a LPG option as far as i know...i meant the jet change could have been done by po or gas dealer...it may not need to be changed on outside equiptment...i know for sure theres a jet change required on home appliances tho.
