My problem is I have no spark at the spark plugs. I have new plugs, wires, roter, magneto, and coil. I have the correct gap on the points and there is a good amount of spark there. I lost the small pin from the cap to the magneto- so I made a duplicate (actually 2- one from steel, one from brass) neither replacement solved the base problem of no spark at the plugs. Any ideas would be very appreciated. This whole thing started with rainwater leaking from the manifold into the heads and cylinders. (engine's fine, it turns over and all gaskets were replaced.) Thanks for any/all help.

when you install the mag dist cap you should feel the spring action as you push the cap on the last 1/2" to 1/4". if you don't feel it, then your rod is too short. BOB

Sounds like you have a FM J or X mag since you mentioned the rod and yes it should be brass and they are available. That rod has to be the right length to contact the springy brass strap that should be on the coil. Did you have fire on the mag right at the coil? Hold a screwdriver grounded on frame and 1/4" away from coil output to make sure you have a good blue spark there first. If not then check connections at points, condenser, and kill switch connection also if it has that. You should be running non resistor spark plug and stranded metallic core spark plug wire and NOT the carbon core wire with a mag. If you have fire at coil then check cap for tracking or cracks and make sure the brush is in the cap also. Switch back to the old rotor to just to check it. I've seen brand new dist. rotors with cracks or pin holes thru them and will short it out dead. Does the impulse drive on the mag make a good crisp snapping noise? If it doesn't the spring could be weak or broke or impulse parts worn or just rusty and dirty needing cleaning and oiling. If the mag bearings are worn or the magnet rotor bent and dragging it won't fire right or none at all. Try that and post back letting us know what you find?
