Allis B Magneto Time?

I decided to replace the plugs and see how she does. Went to my local shop and they gave me AC45R's...which are resister plugs and they said that won't matter...but now it wont start at all? It cranks and sputters, but wont start up...is it magneto time?

As the guys mentioned, it does make a major difference. We carry the Autolite 295's which work quite well. I've used NGK also. The NGK number is B6S. If you have problems finding either brand plug, we have em' in stock. I wouldn't waste my time with the Champions, just way to many fouling problems with them and the longevity isn't there anymore either. We also custom build the correct spark plug wire sets for all model AC machines.... HTH

Hi Steve,

NGK B6S work fine. I've used them in the past. However, I think the NGK B4 is a slightly better choice. It's a touch hotter plug than the B6S and is a direct cross for the old AC45 and Autolite 295. I now use the B4 and have had excellent success with them on my '42B (magneto ignition).

Hi Rod!
Your right! I forgot all about the B4. Experimented with them in my B year before last right at the end of the season with the mag just before I changed it over to one of our experimental recurved distributor setups. After the swap, I tossed in a set of 295's for testing. Still have the 4's & 6's that I took out of the motor on the shelf yet. Nothin' wrong with em'.... Steve@B&B

Thanks all...with a bunch of bad advice from my local auto shop (i guess they don't know any better), my poor little B is trying to fire with suppression wires and resistor plugs. I'll get the right stuff today and let you know how it turns out.

With a magneto you should be using NON resistor spark plugs and stranded metallic core spark plug wires NOT the carbon core wires. It does matter. Check for a spark and clean and set your points again. I have gotten bad brand new AC plugs from the auto store before too. Went to Autolite till they gave me a bad set. You might also find a good non-resistor in a Nippodenso. We run those on irrigation engines with good results with magnetos.

Do a spark test, hold a plug wire about 1/8-1/4 inch from a good ground on the tractor and turn the engine over a few times. You should get a good blue spark. Also the plug wires need to be realy wire, wires not resistor type. If you have a good blue spark the mag is good and you have other problems.

Others will post they have run them since 1892 with no problems and I surely cant argue with them but it does matter according to my magneto man and obviously it matters to your magneto. Remove the 45Rs and make the store replace them with Autolite 295 or Champion J-8. I have run both. Neither are as good as the old A-C45 that is no longer made. The resistor plugs make the mag work harder than it was designed to work and when they are combined with a weak mag they dont work at all, as you have just found out.
