im not exactly sure how a distributor really works but i know its not working for me.. i have power at the breaker points. but im not sure if the distributor cam is supose to be getting power and if it is mine isnt...and i dont know why or whats wrong with it...any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jack, here is the short course on the way a distributor works. Voltage is suppied by the battery to one side of the coil. Current comes out the other terminal and goes to the points. When the points are closed, current flows throught the coil and through the points to ground. When the points open(the condensor function is to prevent arcing of the points and burning of the points), the sudden interuption of the current causes a very high voltage to be generated in the secondary of the coil. This high voltage is directed out the top of the coil to a high tension lead which goes to the center of the distributor cap. The high voltage travels through the cap to the rotor and to the plug that is supposed to fire. Then the process repeats but the rotor has moved to the next plug in the firing order. Etc. The cam function is to open and close the points only. It is driven off the back of the govenor which is gear driven from the front of the engine - usually the crankshaft. When you turn over the tractor, the cam should rotate (opening and closing the points) The points should be set at about 0.015" to 0.018" when they are full open (top of cam lobe).

With this info, determine if the cam is rotating. If it is, pull a plug and ground the outside of the plug to the frame or the engine. Turn the tractor over. If all is working correctly, you should easily see the plug spark.

i checked the point it was set at the right width. Everything rotates right and i think im getting power out of the pos and negative side of the coil but im not getting any out of the top could that be the prob....should i get a new coil..or could somethin be hooked up wrong?

Coils do burn up. Could be your problem. Are you running on 12 volt? If you are, you need a dropping resistor between the ignition switch and the coil to drop the voltage down to about 6 volt. Without the dropping resistor, the coil will fail prematurely. If you are on 6 volt, coil could still be bad. Just get a 6 Volt replacement at your local farm store.

If you are on 12 volt, they do sell 12 volt coils that don't need the dropping resistor. But they also sell 12 volt coils that do need it. Check with seller if one is required.

I just went out and bought a new 12 volt coil, i dont think it has a drop resistor on it. But i dont have an electric start, im still starting it by cranking it over. so i hooked everything back up with the new coil and without a resistor and ive been cranking on that thing for a while and nothing?

Jake, do you have spark now? If the distributor is grounded properly, it should work. I'm wondering if you might have a fuel problem as well. Maybe you could tell me how you got to this point. Was the tractor running and quit on you? Or was it sitting for a while and now it won't start. Or are you rebuilding this tractor? Knowing how you got to this point might help me understand where the failure is.
