I have a Ford NAA and have no complaints with it, but I have been thinking of getting a dedicated mower. So yesterday I stopped and looked at a 1948 Model C Allis with a 5 foot Woods belly mower. Mower looks to be only several years old, original paint and decals look in good condition. Tractor looks fair, paint faded and touched up in spots. The guy is asking 2500 for it including the mower. Is this a good deal? Are AC parts harder to find than Ford parts? Can you get a 3 pt hitch for a C? Is the PTO speed indepedent or like my Ford, tied into the drive gears? Any comments, advice, greatly appreciated.

Great advice from all others...best thing you can do is let it warm up good and take it for a test mow...even put some gas in it for the seller...its worth the 6 bucks...watch for smoke, how it runs, works under load...how is it at cold start and hot start...listen for tranny noises...run through the gears...etc. If it feels good solid, go for it. If the tractor is alittle rough, I'd offer $2200, or needs a tune up and some TLC, 1800-2000. I got my B at auction for 800 and have put 800 into it and now have a great tractor...paint and decals and all.

Model C in condition you discribe is worth $1-1,500 of anybody's money. Last time I price checked Woods a model L59 was $1,400. $2500 seems to be the asking price for such units and is no bargain for average condition but if the tractor is nice original condition and mower is also then it is an OK price. Costs money to chase all over the country for "bargains" with $3 gas too. The Model C and a Woods belly is about as good as it gets for that kind of mower, geared beter for mowing than the Bs and turns shorter.

The C PTO is just like your Ford. You can get a 3 point conversion for the C, but if you are going to dedicate it to mowing and keep your Ford, I wouldn't bother. Parts for the C are no problem. I don't what mower deck is worth for sure, but in my opinion $2500 for the outfit would be top, top dollar. I think you should be able to buy something like that for near a thousand less.

If the Tractor does not need an overhaul.
If the tractor is not going to need tires.
If the Woods mower is in top shape.

If an engine that size needs an overhaul and you can not do it yourself, you will chew up 2500 in the repair shop. Around here a complete overhaul on a B or C is just over 2000 bucks.

If you were to buy a new Woods mower for the C you will chew up 1600 bucks.

So that could be to high or it could be just right. Only you can tell. I love to mow with my B with a woods mower. Not only does it do a good job but I get a lot of rubber neckers driving by.
