Allis B Timing Trouble

After changing points, gapping at .020, setting the rotor at #1 with flywheel at "cent" mark through left side inspection hole...she won't start...not even sputter. I've even tried retiming so that flywheel is on "fire" mark...still no good. The #1 cylinder is the one closest to the front wheels, right?

It looks like the points are opening at the right point.

The info in the shop manual and the service manual contradict each other...so that doesn't help.

Any Help Appreciated!!

i would guess you are firing on the exhaust stroke instead of the compression stroke. if you are not sure, turn the motor one full revolution and stop at the "center" mark. with a distributor, set the point to open now and rotor to point at #1 plug.-- if you have a mag, you should hear the "snap" at this point.

Thanks Steve...that's probably it. I never pulled plug 1 and put thumb over hole to make sure I was timing on compression rather than exhaust...bonehead move...It'll be late tomorrow before I can work on it again but I'll let you know how it goes.

a little time saver tip in reply to jeffalex2, 09-22-2005 18:41:54
if it is 180* out just exchange plug wires
ex: going in a circle 1234...swap 1 & 3 then swap 2 & 4
i been doing it like that over 40 years...works on distributors and mags
