I am installing a 23 GPM pump on the nose of my series 1 from 1959. The pump I most likely going to use is the muncie L series 23 GPM gear pump. I like those muncie pumps. The pump is ordered with a standard B mount and an input shaft with a woodruff key.I will weld up and machine a bracket that bolts to the two mounting holes on the nose casting. this bracket must be done to both protect the flex connector and allow access to it. Not that complex a beastie. The older flex connectors were two chain sprokets held together with a link of double roller sproket chain. This makes removal of the pump a breeze. Just pull two bolts and pop the master link on the chain. The pump is driven by a length of rod 13 inches in length with a woodruff slot on one end and a 6 spline male on the other. Once the pump is removed and the chain flex connector separated, you can just pull the drive shaft straight out. The mail spline interfaces with a 6 spline female hole in the crank pulley flange. This is how allis and henry did years ago during more heady times. The last time I talked to allis/AGCO about these parts, I recall I turned white and fell over gasping for air. In order to work on this aspect of the project, you have to pull the cooling system to get access to the front of the pulley. Right now, I am working on some home made loader structure for the rear of the tractor. Thus I need the ability to drive it around a bit for fitting and welding and grinding and fitting and welding and grinding.. you guys get the point. I have not yet decided if I am going to make some of these parts or not. The hard part is cutting the splines... esp. the female spines. I need to look into doing this myself. I dont know if these spines use an involute shape or not. Any of you guys know this? The actual pulley used seems to be spun from heavy sheet metal... something like a 1/8 inch steel. Its a good pulley for what it is but I doubt that it has enough "meat" to support threaded holes for the spline flange. I also dont yet know how this pulley attaches to the crank shaft. Any of you know this? Does it thread on or is there some kind of retaining nut or clip? It looks like a possible thread on because I can see the end of the crank shaft by looking up the tiny hole on the nose of the tractor using a small flash light. In talking with a local ag dealer that services ford/davis loader tractors, I found that the ford used a similar setup. The shaft is about 25 dollars and the hub is about 39 dollars. That is a far cry from the national deficit spending bill that allis/agco presented to me earlier! I will need to check the bolt circle on this hub and the OD of this hub once I have pulled my pulley. As I recall, the lady said it has a 4.5 inch OD which sounds a bit larger than what you guys have posted. This would mean having to turn down this hub to fit the allis buda crank pulley. The other option is to just turn a whole new billet pulley. One that has this spline setup machined into the front of the pulley to start with. This would require me to get the old south bend metal shaper running again as that may be the best available means to cut those 6 splines. I will take copious notes and photos of this project as I go. Thanks for the info here. Now, if I could only find a 23 GPM pump on the cheap!:)
