AC B exhaust question

The muffler on our B is rough...really rough. I"m going to need to replace it, however I was wondering what muffler works best: the type with the small chamber under the hood or the style with the entire length being the chamber? Currently, ours has the muffler under the hood and just the pipe coming out the top. Next, since I have to replace the muffler, would it be worth my while to try and replace the manifold, or this REALLY hard to get off due to rust, heat, etc.?

Thanks again for this excellent resource site.

If you go to a muffler that is above the hood you can keep the water that will seep down the muffler pipe out by taping out the manifole with an inch and a quarter pipe tap. The buy a muffler that will slip over an inch and a quarter pipe nipple. Only takes a short time and the water problem is gone if and when the tractor is out in the rain. I have done this for years. Before you start to tap the manifold out stuff a rag down in the hole to catch the shavings. When you start the tractor it will blow the fines out. If you go with an under the hood muffler I would"n bother as that muffler will shed the water away from the opening.

Dick, I guess I"m slow to pick this up, but could you elaborate a little bit on this. Sounds like a good idea, keeping the water out that is, but I"m having a hard time getting a mental picture of it.

Thanks!

I had posted pictures of this years back but I can"t find the pictures in my site. I must have lost them when Photopoint went belly up. I will take some more pictures when I get a chanch. All of my tractors set outside so I tap out every one and I have two tractors that I am working on at a snails pace but still needs taped out.

the production muffler slides "into" the exhaust manifold. water can run down the slight crack between the muffler tube and the manifold hole.---- what you do is take a 1-1/4 inch pipe nipple about 4 inches long and screw it into the manifold hole. get a muffler with a slightly bigger tube off a larger tractor, and slide it "over" the pipe nipple. now there is no access for rain water. also stabalizes the muffler a little.

the manifold only needs changed if it is rusted out and has some holes or cracks. it normally is not hard to get off, but the studs can be rusty and need wire brushed and penetrating oil/ heat if they have been on for 60 years.----- the tall exhaust is good for plowing and discing. gets the smoke/exhaust up over your head and dont blow in your face.--- the small muffler under the hood is great if you are working in trees or brush of mowing in the woods.-- i have short on both mine. knocked the big one off too many times in the woods on branches.

Well if the manifold is good why spend the money to replace it? I'd think you could find something else to spend $200 or so on like a plow etc for it.

Good point Old. I think I"ll stick with just the muffler for now.

Thanks for the perspective Steve. I didn"t know if the hood opening allowed a short and tall exhaust.

Thanks again.
