I just completely overhauled my WD engine. It purrs like a kitten at idle and up to about half throttle. When you open the throttle to about half the engine shuts down. Does anyone have an idea?

Any chance it is too rich? try lenaing it 1/8 of a turn and check.. If you can lean it and keep it from dieing, without reducing power too much or making it stumble, you have it made.

Is it magneto or battery ignition? If battery check coil polarity. The point lead should be connected to the positive of the coil if the battery is positive ground which is stock. If tractor has been converted to 12 volt negative ground as when an alternator is installed the point need to be connected to the negative terminal of the coil. If you are 12 volt negative ground Pertronix (sp?) has a solid state replacement for the points and condenser on your 4 banger. I am using one of theie units on the G-262 power unit on my C-II Gleaner.

does it start right back up or do you have to wait awhile before it will start? kinda sounds like its running out of fuel due to a clogged filter or screen only allowing enuff fuel for partial throttle

Yes, it starts back immediately. As a matter of fact, if you quickly push the throttle back to idle then it recovers.

What does it do if you choke it while throttling u in reply to Ron Nickels, 09-20-2005 11:53:13
If that does not affect it (help it run a little better) your problem might be ignition. But I'm guessing it could be something in fuel tank, line, carb.... Also like mentioned there could be a manifold leak. Spray carb cleaner around manifold at an idle and see if the idle drops. If it does you have a leak there. It can also leak stright in from the exhaust part of the manifold. I'd start with the fuel system though. Feed the carb from a known clean tank (container) bypassing strainer. If it runs ok that way you know you have a problem in the line or tank. Rusty tanks seem to be a big problem.

i'd start looking for a blocked passage in carb high speed circuit or maybe an intake leak...somethings causing it to run real lean and die.

Likely a high-speed circuit problem in the carb. Doubt it's a vacuum leak because those are usually more troublesome at low speeds. Did you by cut out any of the gaskets yourself? I'm not familiar with the WD's carb, but on my Harley there is one gasket between the air cleaner and the carb that has a small air-bleed hole in it that cannot be blocked. Ask me how I know.....
