Turns over won't start. Not enough fire. Need to know Gap setting on Points..Looks like has new carburator, coil..been sitting a couple of years..Turns over with a 6 volt battery. Started says 12 volt. Does it have to have a 12 volt Battery? Serial number is 035288,,Would like to know year made to find a proper manual..It's about the size of a riding mower. Has Big Ten plate on side. But can't find one that looks like it..Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Can E-mail pic.

like old said...if starter says 12 volts then starter AND coil need 12 volts. i've got a small engine repair shop and anytime i'm not sure of point gap on older machines i use .015 .it works on 98%...also just because carb and coil look new dont take for granted they are in good shape...especially carb...todays fuel really clogs stuff up even after a few months let alone a couple years...you can use carb cleaner to spray like starting fluid to see if it will fire...its alot safer than ether...also can jump off your car or pickup battery but disconnect that 6 volt battery first and dont start donor vehicle...just use battery power.

also look around for brand name on engine...chances are its a briggs, tecumseh, wisconsin, etc. if its a garden tractor

Yep.. and when in doubt.. a business card or match book cover.. or a flap from the points box usually sets darn close to .015
