I am beginning to design and build my own version of the Henry TS-1000 loader for my D-17 tractor. I have a manual so that helps. Got a couple of questions however.

1). How wide are the loader arms on a standard heavy duty loader? Also, what is the typical thickness of metal used in making these arms. Right now, I am penciling in 1/4 inch wall thickness. Should I go heavier?

2). I have designed the bucket to be 60 in with 1/4 inch wall thickness except for the areas which need extra support such as the bottom and leading edge. Does this sound good?

3). The TS-1000 had a single heavy duty angle iron bar spanning one side of the tractor to the other side. Uprights form rectangular pockets for the loader frame. These tie into the axle tubes. Tiny wing brackets extend from the uprights to pick up the two bolt holes on the axle reduction housing. Right now, this angle is 1/2 inch thick and made from 4x5 angle. The uprights are made from two slabs of 1/2 inch steel with a spacer made from 3/4 inch thick steel that supports a U bolt around the axle. A 1 1/2 inch pin attaches the subframe of the loader to this bracket at both the left side and right side of the tractor directly under the ears of the axle tubes.

So far, most of this has been lifted from the Henry manual. But it does not support brackettry to hang the lower swing arms for a three point hitch. I am currently working on adding these brackets to the backside of this structure and also to add a heavy duty bracket to support a back hoe. Something like a henry mark IV. Still working on this.

The hydraulics are being run off a 23 GPM Muncie pump driven off the main crankshaft in the front of the tractor. The two uprights are heavy duty and may have a tubular cross member. These pillars and its cross member will be where I store my hydraulic oil. Ideally, the sump hose picks up from one pillar and hot, spent oil is returned to the other pillar.

What do you tractor engineers think about this idea so far?

Most loaders I have seen on an Allis tractor the main frame is 3/16, shoot almost the whole thing is. The loader on my Ford is 1/4 inch almost every where but its a big heavy loader. On my OC-3 cletrac the main arms are 1/2 steel. Just to give you ideas maybe.

Thanks, this gives me some ideas. I have noticed that many modern loader arms and structure is hollow and made from flat sections of sheet metal formed into arm halves and then welded together. Sure is easy and makes tapered arms a breeze but can it support a load? Many ag loaders cannot lift over 2000 pounds.

Your Ford sounds like the early ford backhoe tractors with industrial loaders. So those arms are made from 1/4 inch thick steel.

When you say your celtrac had 1/2 inch solid arms, you mean the arms were torched from 1/2 inch plate right?

The henry loader sounds more like your ford loader. Early industrial loader. The book says that these loaders were good for 3000 to 3200 pounds lift to 9 feet with about 4500 pound break out force. Now this is a useful loader.

After looking at the Great Bend loaders, esp. the ones for mid size tractors, I came away thinking that these are a bit light or forgive me, a bit cheesy.

I wonder what the case loaders have for thickness in their arms?

The arms are tapered because someone did a stress analysis before it was built. The widest sections where the highest load is. It means the loader has to pick up less dead weight. Remember that if you make a loader too heavy, your tractor will not be able to handle it. The loader will be ok but the tractor will break. Ypu put the metal where it is needed.
The only 1/2 in. steel on the loader on my 190XT is in the attach brackets. most of the frame is 3/16. The bucket is 3/16 with 1/4 mounts. I admit the loader is a little light for the tractor. I have and industrial loader That I will be using on it when I get the brackes made.
If you use as much 3/8 and 1/2 as it appears, the loader will weigh almost as much as your tractor.
The best aproach is to find one you like and copy the design.

Thanks. This helps out. I did find a loader I like and its the TS=1000 loader made by Henry. I think its equal to an industrial backhoe loader and it even suggests using a mark IV hoe with this loader. The book says it can lift 3000 pounds to about a 10 foot dumping height.

I am using this book and its few limited pictures as a guideline for designing and building mine. Not having seen one in person and not having the engineering drawings, it makes things a little harder to visualize.

The tapered box beams are cool but they take extra effort to make if you dont have the equipment to form them. They can be made by resawing structual steel elements on a large bandsaw such as a grob or doall but this is time consuming and tedious. I have reserved myself to doing this but I need to have some idea of how thick to make these elements, hence my questions. This also takes many hours of arc and TIG welding and grinding to get these beams just right and strong enough.

In looking at the current generation of Great Bend loaders, I have to say that I am disappointed. If you look at the loader on a modern Case backhoe, *THAT* is a loader! The others are gas powered tonka toys. I understand why they need to be made light weight but I need to go the other way.

The TS-1000 loader is listed at weighing in at 1652 pounds minus the bucket. The 60 inch bucket weighs an extra 520 pounds.

So this gives you an idea of where I am comming from. What are the dimensions on the arms of your industrial loader? What about the pillars? How big are they and what is the gage of steel used to make them?

The design also looks streamlined and the word I used to describe it cannot be used on this forum. But it the loader does look good.

Well my ford is an 801, I think the loader is a wagner or freeman but not sure. Before we replaced the pump on it I could pick up a car with it, something the size of a small pickup etc. It lifts 2500 plus but get very light on the rears when I do so. My OC-3 has a ware loader on it and its very heavy duty but the little crawler lacks a lot of HP to really make it work.
