Jerry brings up a good piont about the shafts being worn and the seals leaking the way I split water pumps is by getting the hub cherry red with a torch and then spray the shaft with water and only the shaft so it shrnks put it in the press and press it apart I have never broke the casting but i have broke the hub once and I have done quite a few

Dave, I have rebuilt two on WD's (same as a WD-45), one on a D-17 Diesel and one on an Oliver 70 (I even had to modify some of the parts to assemble the 70). It is not an easy job but I am 4 for 4 without instructions from the kit manufacturer. But I did have an IT manual when I did the Allis tractors. You need to get an IT manual (AC-11). It has an exploded view of the water pump and instructions. After doing the first 3, I didn't need an IT manual for the Oliver 70.

The sealing surface can be a problem if the tractor sat for years without use. If the leak just started and you address it immediately, it should be OK. Clean it well. And remember that a rebuilt water pump will leak a little until the tractor has been run. On the Allis's that took a few minutes. On the 70 Oliver, it took about a half hour and was a significant leak for the first 25 minutes.

I don't want to sound negative, but my dad never had much success rebuilding water pumps at his AC dealership. He just sold new pumps. The major problem is the iron surface the carbon seal spins against. It is usually scored and must be machined smooth before a kit will hold.

Thanks for your reply. And I did not think it was negative, only honest based on your experience.

Dave
