I recently got a 1939 Allis-Chalmers Tractor with an Allis-Chalmers single plow on e-bay. I have two problems: lst: Hand cranking to start is a problem. I just cannot get it started by hand cranking. I have to pull it to get it running. Is there a special technique used in hand cranking this baby? 2nd: The plow came in pieces and I don't know how to mount it. It is an Allis-Chalmers plow with several numbers written on back of plow: 4 SOLD Allis-Chalmers 300305 is a couple of the numbers. Does anyone know where I could find pictures or better the owners manual for this plow? I'm sure the plow is as old as the Tractor. Thanks

Gene was right on the money with starting with a hand crank. I only wish to expand on what he said. It took me some time to learn when to turn off the choke on mine. I"ve cranked it over way to many times and flodded it.

Do make sure not to have it in gear. I always run a simple check by flopping the gear shift back and forth from side to side to make sure its not in gear. Then I set the throttle to full. Put the choke on and crank 3 or 4 times till gas spits out the bottom of the carb. May sound odd, but works great on mine. Then take the choke off, and it usually fires on the 2nd to 3rd crank. But do make sure when you crank, DO NOT crank in a full circle. Only go 1/2 way around starting on the Left, and cranking up and down to the right. Also as Gene mentioned keep your thumb on the same side as the rest of your fingers so if it kicks back, it will just fly out of your hand. Beleve me You don"t want it to bite you. Good luck.

LOOK IN FRONT OF THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER AND GIVE US THE SERIAL # YOU WILL FIND THERE.
ASSUMING IT IS A B. YOU WILL HAVE A FRONT DRAWBAR, A LIFT LEVER, AND A LEVER THAT MOUNTS NEXT TO THE THROTTLE CONTROL TO CONTROL THE PLOW DEPTH. (SHORTER OF THE 2 LEVERS) OTHER LEVER MOUNTS NEAR THE RIGHT FENDER.(LIFT LEVER) BOTH MOUNT TO THE SQUARE TUBE. BEHIND THE SEAT IS THE ROCKSHAFT, MOUNTED IN 2 BRACKETS ATTACHED BELOW THE SEAT.
IF THIS LOOKS FAMILIAR WRITE BACK AND I CAN TRY TO WALK YOU THRU THE MOUNTING OF THE PLOW. BOB

Thanks Bob. The Tractor is a model B, S/N B14965. I'm sorry, but I don't know how you go about attaching a photo to this forum. I know how to send to another e-mail.
Bob, the way you described the parts is right on. There are three pieces. The way you explained it, I believe I can mount it. If I have any problems I'll get back. Thanks so much.

What model tractor do you have?

When you hand crank you should hear a click in the magneto. That's the impulse coupling. Without the impulse coupling working the engine will not start until you pull the tractor and get the engine up to around 250 RPMs. No click - magneto repair.

Hand cranking: ALWAYS/ALWAYS/ALWAYS Lock brakes, clutch pedel locked down, transmission out of gear. Kill switch, if the tractor has one, in the run position.

a. Throttle about 1/3 to 1/2 open.
b. Choke closed.
c. Lift the crank - thumb along side the fingers - thumb is not wraped around the crank handle. Lift don't try to spin the motor. I lift until I can hear the carburator sucking usually 3 or 4 lifts.

d. Open choke. Lift. Engine should start on first or second lift.

You will have to fine tune the starting procedures a bit to match your tractor.

Plow. A photo would help greatly.

Gene

The Tractor is a model B, S/N B14965. Thanks for the info on hand cranking. Your guidance will be very helpful. I don't know how you go about attaching a photo to this forum. I think Bob has me on the right track for mounting the plow. Thx
