I'm trying to read my serial number, but the first character is distorted. It looks like D34794, but that makes no sense for either tractor. If the character is a 2, then it is a 1957 WD-45. But I want to be sure, and would like to know if there is a visual difference I can look for also. It has factory power steering also.

When you read the number, you probably missed the W. The number should be WD34794 which makes it a 1949 WD. It should have a straight shift lever and the bolted cover on the right side of the block. Power steering can be added to a WD. The motors can be changed as well. Serial number and shift lever are the best way to tell. (Except some late WD tractors also had the curved shift lever.)

The most noticable difference is the WD has a Straight Gear Shift while the WD45 has a Gear Shift with a bend in it.that is unless some one has made a change in it. also an older WD. has a side plate on the Right side of the Engine block for Lifter or Push Rod service.

YOU SHOULD HAVE A "W" IN FRONT OF THE "D".
THIS WOULD MAKE IT A 49.
LOOK ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ENGINE, BELOW THE SPARK PLUGS AND BEHIND THE MAG. THERE SHOULD BE A LARGE PLATE BOLTED ON THE SIDE OF THE BLOCK. IF IT IS THERE YOU HAVE A WD. ALSO LOOK NEAR THE AIR CLEANER, ON THE BLOCK, TO FIND THE ENGINE SERIAL #. IT WILL EITHER START WITH WD OR 45 TO DESIGNATE THE MODEL. BOB

I'm thinking it is a WD-45 as it has the factory power steering that didn't come out until 1956.

Dad's WD=45 was a 1957 and came with factory power steering.. I think it was the 1st year for the power steering on the WD-45..

Yep, she's definetly a 1957 upon further review. With good light, and a little emery cloth I got to the actual numbers.
