question on B engine

Am looking at a 53 B that starts and runs but has very little oil pressure and some engine noise at full throttle but not terrible.I think I can get it for the right price, but I would like to know roughly how much it would take to overhaul the engine if necessary. I realize there are a lot of variables, so if I could get a best case and worst case figure, I would appreciate it. Also maybe some ideas on other causes of low oil pressure. Thanks

Is the oil pressure low or does the guage fluctuate also. The guage on my 48 C was reading low and jumpy. I read on a forum that it is common for a plug to fall out of the pick up tube. I pulled the oil pan off and found plug in the pan.It is similar to an expansion plug. I tapped it back in and I have no problem running 20 PSI when cold and mid teens warm with 10w30.The reason for the thin oil is because it mainly plows snow.I have heard that the plug falling out is quite common on B's and C's.

Ditto what the others said. Might be bad oil.. gas contaminated.. or 10w30.... I'd like to see the oil pressure #'s on a good gauge, with new 30w oil, on a warm tractor at idle and throttle and then decide what I wanted to do with the engine.

My 1946 ford 2n has 18 psi cold, and drops to about 10 psi hot idle on 30w oil. When it gets a little lower.. I'll go to 40w oil... then.. who knows....

the small CE motor should have about 12-15 psi at full throttle. that might drop to 5 psi at low idle. first thing to do is make sure you have a good working gauge, and not a 0-100 psi gauge. second thing is the motor has a filter and it is a bypass system. the filter is highly restrictive and lets 15% of the oil go thru it and back to sump. the motor uses the other 85% of the oil. if you have the wrong filter and it lets 40-50% of the oil thru it, you will LOOSE pressure. make susre the filter is a FRAM C159 or Baldwin T300M. some filters that fit (WIX- NAPA) are not good. last, you could have a worn pump or bearings inside. Kits cost $300 for a bunch ofparts if you can do the work yourself. Possibly the pump vanves are stuck or spring broke and that can be fixed for a few dollars. YOu just dont know. check the filter and gauge first- big possibility.

What do you mean by low. Most of the allis tractors don't have much more then 20psi hot and maybe 10 warmed up. As far as how much it could cost to rebuild the engine that could be anywhere from $350-1500 depending on how much you did.

can be caused by fuel contaminated oil,bad oil pump, worn main rod and cam bearings, relief valve stuck open, not enuff oil in pan, worn tolerances, the list goes on forever but that should keep you busy for awhile.
good luck
