Allis WC timing...can't find FIRE mark on flywheel

I have a 37' Allis WC that I am trying to get running. I can not find the the "FIRE" mark on the flywheel to get the engine lined up for the magneto. Many years of sitting has pitted the flywheel out (or maybe it was the family of mice living in the bell housing). Is there someway to get the engine lined up without the "FIRE" mark? Also the engine is being hand cranked. Thanks!

The way I time all hand crank engines with impluse type mags is as follows: Find top dead center compression strokeof number one cylinder. Then turn the crank a little more until you are slightly after TDC. Now install the mag, in the full retard position, with the bug at number one plug wire and the impluse engaged. Whit the bolts holding the mag loose, turn the mag to advance it until the impulses snap. Tighten the mag at this point. If done this way you will not get kicked while hand cranking an engine with an impulse mag.

The bolt holding the pulley to the front of the crank shaft is at TDC (give or take a degree). Roll the engine over until this bolt is in 11:00 o'clock position - as viewed while standing in front of tractor.

The F mark will be centered in the inspection hole (remove the entire inspection plate). Take a wire brush to the back of the flywheel.

He still has to do the thumb trick to make sure he is on the compression stroke before installing the mag.

Remove the spark plug from #1 cylinder. While someone cranks the engine, put your thumb in the spark plug hole to seal it up. When the cylinder starts up on the compression stoke, you'll feel the pressure and eventually air will come out around your thumb. When the crank is at center bottom Or center top (depending on where the crank was when compression started), this will be appoximately top dead center (or fire). This position is reached every other revolution. You can get closer to tdc by putting a wire in the cylinder. When it stops being pushed out, it is tdc. Also, you can re-inspect the flywheel when you have found TDC. When you know where fire is, it's easier to find.
