I have a1940 ac b that willnot stay in 3rd gear unless I hold the gear shifter in the slot. Is there a easy fix, or do Ineed to tear down the trans?

Thanks all
Jay

Pull the forks out of the side of the transmission and check on the condition of the gears. Alternately, slide into each gear. Observe how well the gears mesh. If everything looks OK, it could be worn out forks and the shifter assembly.

I had this problem in 3rd gear on my CA. I got a good used set of forks and swapped out the assembly. This got my CA to work. Could be new forks would help but they would need to be in better shape than those you have. Hard to tell how good they are without a micrometer and a caliper. This would be the easiest fix. The only other way is to pull the transmission and replace the upper and lower 3rd gears.

this is the 6 inch diameter round cover on the side by shift lever. forks are mounted to the plate you will remove. drain transmission first.
