Hello all. The B arrived via truck/trailer yesterday morning. Cosmetically, it"s not in great shape, however once I got it running it ran like a top. I have a couple of questions already, though. First, the previous owner told me to turn off the fuel and let it run out before shutting the ignition off. Will this harm anything? Second, the starter is not wanting to engage most of the time. It IS getting electricity and the battery is charged, and it does make a clicking noise, however most often it won"t actually spin up. I cleaned the contacts on the starter switch, but that didn"t do me any good. I am thinking of getting the starter rebuilt, unless you have any other suggestions. What should this cost me (about)? In the mean time, how difficult is it to hand crank this, assuming I buy a crank? Thanks again for the great information and discussions. I"m very pleased to have you all to lean on now and then for help.

My B starts with a crank so easily that I haven't replaced my starter for over ten years. My starter spins but won't extend, over the years the nut that ribes the shaft get wedged onto the shoulder of the shadt. The shoulder wears away a place on the nut for it to wedge onto from residual spin when the nut returns.

The reason for running it dry is that many tractor carburatous have a poor needle valve and if the rractor is left set the gravity flow of the fuel will flood the carburator. As to the starter check the brushes they may be worn and also check the brush springs as they may be weak. Pull back on the brush and let go , it should snap back briskly. Burushes and springs are not hard to replace if you are mechanically inclined.

Sometimes a new Bendex Gear and some Grease on the Starter Shaft helps. Maybe the Bendex Gear is not sliding on the shaft to engage the fly wheel?

It could be that the starter has lost a good ground. I would remove the starter locking stud and wire brush, file, grind, to where it is shinny and lock it in good. You might, if you have wooden dowel and some sand strip, shine up the dimple in the starter thru the hole the stud threads into as well.
Running it out of fuel will make sure the carb does not gunk up on you. I turn off the fuel on all my pulling tractors after loading them on a trailer. The bouncing down the road will some of the time cause the gas to start flowing thru the carb and empty the tank. To answer you question as to what harm it would do is, it will do no harm.

IF YOU ARE GOING TO STORE THE TRACTOR FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME, 3 TO 6 MONTHS OR LONGER, THEN ITS A GOOD IDEA TO RUN IT DRY. I WAS AT A SHOW AND A MAN WITH A B DRAINED THE BOWL AFTER THE PARADE OR ANY TIME HE STOPPED THE TRACTOR.
ALSO WHEN YOU HAVE THE STARTER OUT USE A WIRE BRUSH, BY HAND OR ON A DRILL TO DERUST THE INSIDE OF THE HOLE THE STARTER SLIDES INTO. ALSO REMOVE THE BATTERY TERMINALS AND CLEAN THEM AS WELL AS THE MOUNTING ON THE OTHER END OF THE GROUND STRAP. MAKE SURE ALL THESE AREAS ARE CLEAN AND RUST FREE. ENJOY YOUR B, IT'S A GREAT LITTLE TRACTOR. BOB

To tell you congratulations on getting your B. They are fun tractors and will do much more than you would have ever thought from a small tractor. If the engine is up to snuff and you add the amount of weight needed, you can pull a 2 14" bottom pull type plow. You can also pull an eight foot disk with enough weight and wider tires. When I was in school, we had a neighbor that farmed 80 acres with a B and at the same time Dad farmed 148 acres with a Allis Chalmers C. The C would walk the 2 14"S right a long with 12 inch rubber. Pulled an 8" disk and packer the third time over. Could not hang a drag on behind the packer. I have that old 8" disk out back. Could not tell anyone how many sets of blades and bearings have been gone thru and one of these days it will get another set.

Thanks again Dick. I'm looking forward to working, working on, and learning about, this B. We have about 9 acres now, with the Mother-in-law living a mile or so away on another 7 acres. I'm hoping to plow the two driveways out and maybe get a finish mower to keep the grass in control. The B came with a 3 pt. 5 ft. snow/dirt plow, and since it has a 3 pt. hitch on it I'm going to give it a try this winter. It also came with tire chains that should help if need be...all the tires are new, so that should help also. I'm looking at getting about 35 or so acres down the road from me that has a little barn already on it. I've always wanted to do a little hobby farming, and I'm hoping the B will prove OK for this. Sounds like it from what you say you've seen done with 'em. Do you know if local farm repair shops can check the condition of starters? I tried what you mentioned and it's still not turning over. It does once in a great while, but mainly it clicks and that's it.

Most larger towns have a starter, generator, and Alternater rebuild service. At least they do in my area. Any farm repair shop can point you to one. Most farm repair shops in my area send starters out for rebuild. What they do in your area I could not say.

Have you tried removing the battery cables and cleaning the posts on the battery and inside the cable ends.They need to be shiny also

I tried what you guys suggested and it (so far) turns over and fires right up every time, over the last couple of days. Maybe it was just rust causing it to turn over only once in a while? Thanks again...I'm hoping it'll STAY working like this.
