Bill, if its a 3 wire (BAT ARM FLD) VR

BAT on VR wires up to the Load (NOT to battery) side of the ammeter. Thats the same wire/circuit that used to wire to the the BAT side of the old Cutout Relay. i.e. just take it off the relays BAT and hook it to the BAT terminal on the VR.

ARM (or GEN) on VR wires to the Generators Armature post.

FLD on VR wires to Gens Field post.

You no longer run any wires from the Gens Field post up to the light switch.

If your new VR has 4 terminals BAT ARM FLD LOAD, the Load terminal is now what feeds loads like lights n ignition etc versus it being fed off the ammeters load side terminal as with only a 3 wire VR

NOTE if the Gen is a 3 brush?? I would set it for max charge if youre gonna replace the old relay with a new VR.

If the generator werent already, I would polarize it and be sure your new VR is suitable for your ground, i.e. Pos or Neg.

I will be at the Elnora Indiana tractor show the next 3 or 4 days.
