I recently restored a C allis chalmers. I removed the generator at the start of the work. I have replaced the wiring harness and have double checked and rechecked the connections. The generator now does not charge on high or low. It worked fine prior to removal. Is there something that has to be done to the generator when it is removed and reinstalled?

Thanks in advance, Russ

Russ, PRELIMINARY CHECKS

First thing I would do is insure the Generator has a good ground to the tractors frame. If in doubt run a ground wire direct from the grounded battery post to the Generator n see if she charges then??

Next are you sure the ammeter is good n wired correct??? BOTH of its terminals MUST read hot battery voltage always, does yours?? IF you turn on lights when shes NOT running does the ammeter swing over to discharge?? it should !!!

Next there MUST be hot battery voltage present on the BAT (NOT to Gen) side of the cutout relay. Thats how n where the Gens output can get to n charge the battery once the cutout relay closes. That BAT terminal wires up the the load (NOT to battery) side of the ammeter and thats where n why IT MUST ALWAYS READ HOT BATTERY VOLTAGE, does yours??

Also, for the cutout relay to work it needs a good ground connection which is to the Gens case if its a gen mounted unit.

Sooooo ooooo oo once you insure the Gen has a good ground,,,,, ,the relay has a good ground,,,,, ,,BOTH sides of ammeter are hot,,,,, ,,,,,the BAT (NOT terminal to Gen) terminal on the Cutout relay is hot,,,,, ,,, heres how to troubleshhot the Gen and light switch field control circuit.

1) With the tractor running, dead ground the Gens Field post to frame n see if she charges then. If so BUT NOT OTHERWISE, the problem is EITHER the light switch field control circuit is bad orrrrr rrrr the wires missing/open from the switch to the Gens Fld post,,,,, ,,orrrrr rrrrr rr the light switch dont have a good ground to the tractor (typical problem, check that out)

2) If she still dont charge with the Field post dead grounded, leave it grounded and then by pass jump around the cutout relay by connecting its BAT and GEN (or ARM) terminals together. If it charges then but not otherwise, the cutout relay is bad or not grounded.

3) With the Field grounded and the cutout relay by passed, if shes still not charging AND IF THE PRELIMINARY CHECKS ABOVE ARE ALL OKAY, its likely a Gen problem.

4) MOTOR TEST: Remove the gens belt,,,,, ground the Gens Field post,,,,apply hot battery voltage (such as off the BAT terminal on the relay) to the Gens ARM post and she ought to run which says the Armature n brushes are likely okay..... ...then if when you unground the Gens Field she speeds up a lil (as it should) that says the Field windings are likely okay. USUALLY if it pases BOTH these tests, the Gen is okay.

Try the simple things first like insuring the Gen and relay have good grounds and then that the light switch has a good ground.

Did you try jumping the battery postive to the charginng lead on the generator? Just a quick tap to make a spark to polerise the generator.

When you say restored I assume repainted too? If so you probably have lost a ground, probably the switchbox itself. Here are a couple quick checks. First thing I do in such cases is loosen the generator belt so it can turn freely then remove the cover from the cutout relay and push the points together while someone watches the ammeter. (engine off) The generator should turn or "motor" and the amp gauge should show discharge. Dont hold the contacts together for longer than a second or the ammeter and wiring may be damaged. In doing this you have made sure the generator is good as one that will motor will generate, the wiring between the relay and battery is OK, the amp gauge is working and you just repolorized the generator. Assuming that all is OK here start the tractor and pull the switch all the way out to high charge. The system is made to charge by grounding the field "F" though the light switch. If it is still not charging run a seprate wire from the "F" terminal directly to the ground terminal of the battery, if it charges(it will) you have lost ground in the switch to switch box or box to frame.

Are you sure you have the high/low switch grounded good as this is what grounds the field of the generator.

Sorry, you put that in while I was typing.
