Front Seal on WD45 gas

In the process of reworking the engine on our 53 WD45 gas, and working on redoing the front seal. Our local AGCO dealer told us their were 2 different front seals used on the 45 gas, depending on when it was made. We bought both to avoid the 30 mile one way trip again and went to work. However, the front seal we removed doesnt match either of the ones that we bought. The previous one is roughly twice as thick as the new ones (about 3/8" instead of 3/16"), and has the word McCoro stamped into it along with a serial number that we cannot match to anything on the new parts. The old seal stuck out of its groove roughly 1/8", and it looks like the new ones would be more flush when installed. Does anyone know which of these is correct? Has anyone had experience with this before?

When the seal is installed, it will be nearly flush with the casting. If they are both the same inside diameter and both the same outside diameter, they will both fit. Allis may have changed vendors or composition and decided to issue a new part number.

It sounds to me like the one that you had on the tractor was the wrong seal which may be why it leaked. Before putting in the new seal, clean the shaft thoroughly where the seal will go. Do not install until the surface is perfectly smooth and shiny. If there is dirt there, the seal will fail quickly. Since the old seal was wrong, the sealing surface hasn't been used lately. Cleaning it critical in this case.

Thanks for the tip - will be cleaning and installing the proper gasket (the ones that fit flush).

Try to find a Victor 46026. It came out of a WD, but I think the cranks are the same diameter. This is the thick seal, not the chintzy thing NAPA or sometimes AC will give you.
