WD starter

I think I need a new starter for my WD. Checked the battery and it's fine. Checked all the connections and wires to be sure all were solid and all appear fine. Having a devil of a time turning over the engine. Get one big chug and then nothing. Question is, with a 1950 WD, which starter do I use? I&T manual says there are two: 1107017 and 1107043. Which one is correct?

Also, getting a puddle of gas in the carb when the tractor sits. If I disconnect the hose that runs from the bottom of the carb to the oil bath a bunch of gas spills out. Choke stuck open? Heck, gas is liquid gold these days - I hate to waste any!!

Thanks a bunch.

I would guess that the two different starters are either 1 for negative ground and another for positive ground OR 1 for 6 volts and 1 for 12 volts. That is just my guess.

Remove the band cover and look at the brushes, are thay worn short if so replace. Pull back on the brushes they should all snap back briskly. If you are mechanically inclined replacing brushes and springs is not hard, do one at a time and follow what the others look like.

If it"s still 6 volt check 6 the positive (ground) strap. They can be bad and not evidence other problems.

On a tractor that does a lot of sitting around, and wired like the AC- you may have poor contact between the starter and the frame. Remove the starter and wire brush the outer case and the frame circle it fits in to. Regarding the fuel problem- a choke left on does nothing- likely you hae a stuck float. Piece of gunk under the needle, replacement needles usually have a rubber tip= fewer problems. Could be improper bend in the float- check the measurement vs specs for that carb. Too many gunk problems from a dirty tank- remove the sediment bulb unit, stick one inch piece of plastic line inside the fuel inlet & replace. Picks up less gunk floating around the bottom of the tank.

Chad, Ive not messed with many Allis, but can offer some generic advice which may or may not be helpful.

Prior to suspecting a starter problem, I would first eliminate of its a cable or ground or battery connection problem. Thennnnn nnnn if its a starter switch or relay problem instead of the starter itself (see below)

1) Althoug you indicated you did so, to be safe, I would Remove,,,,, Clean n wire brush,,,,, ,and Reattach each n every battery n stater n switch n ground connection. If the ground happened to be on any rusty sheet metal seat or battery box, I would attach it to a good solild clean frame member.

2) Are you sure the battery is good and charged??? Has it been Load Tested by a battery shop??? Is there electrolyte above all the plates and no cells exhibitign any gray or milky color??? Maybe try a good substitute battery n see what happens??

3) SWITCH OR SOLENOID PROBLEMS

If you turn the lights on and try n start her, do the lights dim wayyyyy y down when shes trying to start????? If so I suspect more of a starter problem then a bad starter switch or starter solenoid. Also, if the starter gets realllll hottttt ttttt I suspect the starter.

If when you try n start her the lights dont dim very much, I suspect a possible bad starter switch or starter solenoid.

If it has a mechanical push to start starter switch (mounted right on starter with an activation rod) and the starter dont get hot or lights dim bad when cranking,,,,, ,I would remove the switch and inspect BOTH the copper post on the starter and the switches washer/contactor for burning n pitting and being all carboned up !!!!! !! If the switch is burned or pitted or carboned up I would replace it. If the starter post (if it has one) is all burned n pittred you may get by with a cleaning n wire brush and light filing to get her to work again, or it may need repalced.

If it has an electric solenoid starter switch, you can try to use jumper cables to by pass jump around it (battery side to starter side) to see if it cranks better then. CAUTION thats a high current jump so use care!!!!! !!!

FINALLY, if the battery is good n well charged,,,,, ,,,if all battery n ground n starter n switch connections are all good,,,,, ,,,if the cables are all good,,,,, ,if its NOT a starter switch problem or the starter post under it is NOT burned/pitted,,,,, ,,,and especially if the lights dim way down and/or the starter gets real hot,,,,, ,,I SUSPECT A BAD STARTER. (worn brushes or shorted or dragging armature or worn bushings etc)

NOTE This assumes its not mechanically sticking (check that out) its drive gear teeth into the flywheel and the engine isnt siezed up (insure that)????

Look at the start you have right now. There should be a little plate on it with the start numbers on it. Then just go from there. If you can't find that number I guess I could look at the starter I have out on my parts tractor
