I am doing a complete tune up and I need to know the firing order and the number 1 piston to start I hav e 54 wd. 4 cyl. with a gen, and distributor. I also need to know where the condenser, is. Obviously I am the most knowlegable with this older equipment. Thanks guys. jhk's wd

But if you pretend that the mag cap is turned up it will show where the wires go anyway. Number one is up by the fan.

The firing order is 1,2,4,3. When looking stright onto the top of the distributor cap, my #1 plug wire is in the 2:00 position, #2 is at 4:00, etc. The condensor is under the distributor cap. Take the cap off, remove the rotor button, remove the dush shield by prying very carefully around the edges. Under the dust cap is the points and condensor. If you are changing the condensor, go ahead and get a new set of points. Check the cap for condensation and cracks. Check the rotor button for wear and make sure that the tab on top is horizontal, not bent up at a 90 degree angle. If you are having problems with the old girl running rough, and you do not have any particular expertise installing points, you may consider the Petronix electronic ignition system available from this site. I just installed one and it is very simple and gave my old girl more horsepower than I ever knew she had. Hope this helps.

Fireing order should be stamped in to the side of the block. #1 if the front most cylinder. The condenser is under the dist cap right next to the points. There no need in knowing the fireing order unless you have puled all the plug wire off, and thats a no no in the first place. Any time you do plug wires you pull them one at a time and put them back one the same way.

I think jhk"s wd was looking for the fireing order because he was trying to figure out which cylinders were showing a higher amount of carbon on the plugs. Looks like the #1 plug is pretty minimal. The other three had heavy carbon deposits.
