Guys, This tractor sat (owner died 1990)for over 20 years outside, I'recently went through the entire engine (sleeves, pistons, bearings, valves, guides, seats and everything else)along with rebuilding the carburator twice to ensure I didn't miss anything.

Anyway, she fires right up but you have to play with the choke. The tractor only wants to operate near full choke and runs really smooth for a short periods. Under load (in gear) the tractor wants to run rough as heck or dies, seems like she is flooding at times but other times it seems as though its run out of gas. I know the carb is right and the flow from the tank is without blockage. Should I try an electric fuel pump?? The elevation from the tank to the carb is almost the same. OR could my problem be the govenor??

If you are sure that the carb is completely clean, it sounds like you may not have the carb adjusted just right. It probably is a Marvel Shebler(Sp?) carb? I am not to familiar with the smaller MS carbs, just the bigger one on my D-19. It should have a idle adjustment that controls the fuel mixture at low idle and then may also have a load adjustment. Both of these screws will be on the top with the load adjustment the one closer to the edge of the carb. If you have to completely choke it to get it to run right, you need to adjust the idle mixture as it sounds like it is running to lean. Turn the screw all the way in and then back it out 1 1/2 turns. Start the tractor and see how it runs. Keep adjusting until you can take the choke completely off. Once you have that set than if it has a load adjustment, you neet to set that. This is done at full throttle. Start with this screw out 1 1/2 turns and then turn out until tractor runs rough and then back in until it smooths off. If these adjustments help but still not running right, you may have a passage in the carb that is blocked with a speck of rust or dirt. The float may not be adjusted right or the needle seat may be sticking also. I would also suggest putting an in line fuel filter between your sediment bowl and the carb.

I think your problem is still the carburetor. The most common problem with the govenor is that the carb position doesn't change with load so the tractor slows down. Or the tractor surges. The govenor will have no impact on the problem you have with the choke. A fuel pump will not help as the carburetor inside is a gravity device. There is plenty of drop from the tank to the carb. If you don't think so, remove the line at the carb and watch the gas come out. If it doesn't come out fast, you have a restriction in the settling bowl or tank. Even though you have gone through the carb twice, a third time is necessary. Some of those small orifices are plugged or restricted. They need to be 100% open and clean to work properly. The tube that runs from the center of the updraft to the bottom of the carb bowl is probably where the problem lies. The idle circuit is probably the other. It will take hours of soaking with carb cleaner and probing with soft copper wires to get it clean. If you know someone with a similiar tractor, switch carbs to prove the point.

If the tractor sat for 20 years anywhere and you didn't check the govenor, you should. A little rust inside it can cause you lots of problems. And don't forget the linkage, 20 years of weather can't have helped it. Unless you did something wrong, sounds like the fuel system should be fine. You won't need an electric pump. Of course a bit of dirt or rust can get in the best fuel system and play heck with it. Make sure your manifold gaskets are not leaking also.

The gov linkage seems to be free and does throttle back and forth when the engine is running but I don't know whats normal movement.

How do I check it? Do I disassemble the unit??
