170 cuts out going uphill

I have a problem with my A-C 170 that showed up a few weeks ago. It runs fine until the engine warms up, and then it begins to cut out any time a heavy load is put on the tractor. The problem seems to show up every time the tractor is pointed uphill...? I can keep it running by choking it repeatedly, but it will die if I do nothing. Once the tractor is back on level ground (or the load is removed) the engine smooths out. Seems to be fuel related since choking it keeps it running, but I'm not real sure. Anybody have any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Paul

could be a weak coil also. We had a C like that. It ran fine as long as it was not under heavy load. It takes a stronger spark under full throttle.

My first thought is low fuel level in the gas tank. If the tank outlet is towards the front tank, as the tractor goes up hill, fuel flows to the rear of the tank. If the hill is steep enough you run out of gas with 5 gallons in the tank. Been there, done that, got my stupid T-shirt, and a nearly rebuilt WD before I figured that one out.

I would point the tractor up hill then pull the fuel line at the carburator and check for fuel flow.

Could be trash in the tank.

WD sited should be an unstyled WC. Couldn't back up to change the post for some reason.

Someone sent me an e-mail on the subject. I live in Linn.

I had spend the winter rebuilding the engine on the WC. Took the WC out for a spin - ran great. Up the hill headed back to the shop, engine died. Coasted back down the hill, check the fuel had 3 inches in the tank. Let the tractor set -thinking - engine started, same thing. I pulled and overhauled the magneto - same thing - up the hill - died. Pulled the front cover to check the gear timing. Same round trip. Changed manifolds - same round trip. Rechecked the ignition timing. Overhauled the carburator. By this time I was running low on fuel. Put in 5 gallons of fuel and the tractor ran up the hill.

It's a great story for family reunions.
