Hi,
I am going to be a new (old) tractor owner. I have been around and used tractors for a good part of my life, but never had my own. I just won a bid on E-bay for a 1953 CA. I am going to pick it up this weekend. I was wondering if there is anything I should look for that I should be wary of. I expect that I will be on this forum quite a bit as I get familiar with my new toy/work horse.

Check the hand clutch. This is a weak point on the CA. With the tractor running at medium speed in 1st gear push hard on the breaks , you should be able to stall the engine. If the breaks stop the tractor but does not stall the tractor either the engine clutch or the hand clutch is slipping. To determine which clutch is slipping , engage the pto and do the same thing. If you can stop the tractor and the pto keeps going it is the hand clutch that is slipping. If the pto stops it is the engine clutch that is slipping.

If you don't already have one, before you do anything else go back to ebay and get a CA Operators manual. Then get a CA Service manual.

Good luck with your CA. They're a pleasure for sure.

CHECK USUAL THINGS, PULL DIP STICK- OVER FULL, WATER IN OIL, ETC. CHECK WATER LEVEL. RUN TRACTOR AND CHECK TRANSMISSION, SOME JUMP OUT OF 3rd GEAR WHEN GOING DOWN INCLINE. REV IT UP AND THEN DOWN TO SEE IF IT POPS OUT.
GREAT LITTLE TRACTOR, THINKS IT IS MUCH BIGGER. LOTS OF POWER. I HAVE 2 OF THEM. LOTS OF LUCK AND HAVE FUN WITH IT. BOB
