If the relay is stuck closed, when you shut the tractor off it will discharge the battery and get the Generator very hot cuz its trying to make it turn as a motor but the belt wont allow that. If its stuck when you shut the tractor off an ameter (if wired properly) will swing to discharge and if the belt were removed the Gen would spin.

CHECK OUT THE CUTOUT RELAY Insure its open when the tractors off otherwise the gen will get hot and the batery will discharge.

NOTE: If you have a full fledged 3 or 4 wire Voltage Regulator instead of a 2 wire cutout relay the above still holds true, the relay is located inside the VR (beterrn its BAT and ARM (or GEN) terminals.

Other things: Did you Polarize the Generator once you got things all repaired???? If its not polarized there could be a problem!!!!! !

If the Generators Field were dead grounded it calls for max charge, you might check the wiring from the Gens Field post to see if it wired correct to a light switch or if its a Voltage Regulator to the FLD terminal on the VR and NOT constantly stayign dead grounded. The light switch controllers connects the Field to ground via a resistor for low charge but direct to ground for high charge.

That said, it is also possible that it is working too hard. You need to be sure the generator is connected correctly to the battery (ammeter). Measure the voltage across the battery terminal with a multi-meter. It should be between 13 and 14.5 volts for 12 volt and 6.5 and 7.3 volts for a 6 volt system. If the voltage is over 15 for 12 volt or 7.5 for a 6 volt, your generator is overworking which will lead to premature battery failure and possibly early generator failure.
