I have a 1958 d14. The tractor has always been an easy starting tractor. Recently, I can start it and run it for 20-30 minutes mowing pasture then it suddenly sputters and dies. I engage the clutch, idle down and try and restart - it will not start. I can leave it 3-4 hours (or the next day) and it starts and runs well. I'll mow for another 20-30 minutes and it sputters and dies. Any ideas? Thanks.

Next time it dies immediatly pull a plug wire and look for spark.. if it has spark, look at fuel.. things like fuel tank vacume 9 hissing when you undo the cap.. etc.

I"d check out the condensor also. They"ll heat up and rob your spark.

What everyone is saying is worth checking, but I would think that you have covered those items
already. As memory serves me AC's had a problem with oil filters plugging causing a scenario like that. I can remember a B that I had. It would run great with plenty of power for about 20 minutes. It would then die and blow the dip stick out of the engine. The pluggged filter would cause the engine to build up pressure until it couldn't run anymore. When I pulled the oil filter and it was extremely heavy, obviously almost totally plugged. A new filter resolved the problem.

I had this experience with a WD. Usually didn't need to wait hours to start again but the problem was fuel. There was junk in the tank. Check your settling bowl as soon as the tractor stops. Remove the glass bowl. If gas runs out freely, reassemble the bowl. Pull the line off at the carb. If gas flow freely out the line, hook it up again. Pull the drain out of the bottom of the carburator. If gas runs out clean and fast, replug it. There could still be junk in the carb bowl that plugs the main jet. Before pulling the carb, check for spark as Old suggests. If you've got good spark pull the carb and clean it.

I solved my problem on the WD by putting a 1" stand pipe in the settling bowl so gas wouldn't be drawn from the bottom of the tank. I used a 1/4" x 1" copper tube for the stand pipe.

It"s either not getting fuel or it"s not getting fire. I think Old has hit on the most likely cause. But if you find you are getting fire to the plugs when it won"t run or start, then you"ve got a fuel flow problem.

My guess would be that the coil is going bad. Check for spark as soon as it dies, if you don't have any its most likely the coil.

I have a 1958 D-14 that had the same problem. I solved it by replacing the coil and that seemed to fix my problem. Good Luck D14 Dan
