D14 Reliability

Can someone provide me some insight to the reliability or maybe I should say the reputation the Allis D14 (1957 model) had in the farm place. I"m about to restore one thats been sitting out for 20 years and wasn"t wanting to sink a fortune in her if it isn"t appropriate.

I have to agree with John. There is a chance that there may be a problem with the transmission. After all, there has to be a reason for it being parked for 20 years. I am among the small number that believe the transmission problem can be fixed with a new set of forks or some new components on the forks. The engine is probably stuck or worse. That is the bad news.

The good news is that the D-14 is a great tractor. I've got 8 different makes and 16 total tractors. The D-14 is the most versatile and handy tractor I have. I use mine for bailing shredding, hauling manure, pulling wagons, dragging trees, etc. I don't see a weakness other than if the tractor has a loader (mine doesn't). 100% Full time hydraulics would be nice with a loader. The D series have a live power clutch which maintains hydraulics and the PTO. However, you can't use it to shift - grinds gears.

You can get them in farm condition for $2000 to $2500. Can't say what a restored value would be - probably $500 more.

The major issue you need to be conserned with is the transmission. Some owners ground the gears by trying to shift the tractor on the go, and now some of them want to pop out of gear when going down hill. This can be expensive to fix. Other than that they are about as solid as anything there is. Of course it's really hard to tell the condition of a transmission when a tractor isn't running. If it were me, I'd figure there is as much as a 50/50 chance I'll need to spend $1000 in the transmission. Of course a tractor sitting out for 20 years is for sure going to need some things. A good running D-14 can be found for between $2000 and $2500 in my neck of the woods.
