I posted question about timing a D-17 earlier ("D-17 won't start") and received a few nice replies but I still having problems finding the timing marks. Where is the timing hole and is it covered by a plate or bolt? The only hole that I have found is parallel to the axles and when I look in it with a flashlight, do not see any marks. I have the IT repair manual but they don't explain where it is. A picture would really help me to find it. Thanks to all for the help!

Take out the number one spark plug and spin the engine until you hit the compression stroke. Take a flashlight and look down the spark plug hole and see if the piston is all the way up. You may need to turn the engine by hand to get the piston to top dead center. I usually turn the fan. Look through the timing hole and you should see marks on the flywheel. If not just turn the fan a little to spin the engine until the marks come up. Once I could see the marks on my tractor I painted them with a modeling brush and white paint.

It's on the right had side of the torque tube at the widest point where the flywheel is inside. It's a round hole about 3/4 inch in diameter. There are only two marks on the flywheel, one is just a line for TDC and the other will have a number (either 25 or 30 depending on if it's a newer or older D17) indicating either 25 or 30 degrees before TDC. It is this mark you use when using a timing light and timing at high idle.
