WD Hydraulics

Run into my first real head-scratcher with my 1950 WD. The hydraulics seem to be stuck. The control lever won't move but about 1/2 inch in either direction (it's right in the middle of the range). The rams are fairly rusty (the shaft that moves in and out of the cylinder is rusty and pitted instead of shiny) and one has a noticeable leak. I attached a mower to it to see if some weight would help and it's still stuck.

Any thoughts? Many thanks!

Why is the lever not moving? Is the linkage stuck or is a valve in the control body stuck? My opinion is start at the control lever and work your way through the system starting with the simplest thing first. You may not need to tear everything apart. I have seen a lot of hydraulic problems on the WD to be nothing more than a linkage problem.

You'll need to do some breakdown. First, the cylinders. Remove the hydraulic hose from both cylinders. Then attempt to lift the lift arms to maximum. If you can, leave them fully out and remove them from the tractor. With some non abrasive cleaner (chrome cleaner is a good choice), clean up the rams. If you can get them smooth and shiny, they can be used. If not, go to Ebay. There is a set for sale every week or two.

Next is the valve. Go to TSC or a farm store and buy an IT manual. Follow their instructions on removal of the valve. If it doesn't come apart, try soaking it for a few days in carb cleaner. Dissassemble and clean and polish all spools. Then reassemble. Pay close attention to the order of dis-assembly of this valve. Before reinstalling, check to see that all linkage is free and moves without binding. Then reinstall.

You may need to pull the pump and work on it, too. But get your cylinders and valve in working order first. Then test the system to see if the pump is OK.
