Since my original regulator wore out (lasted 40= years), my replacements have been horrible. I know the field wire goes to the F pole on the generator and the gen. connection on the regulator gores to the A pole on the generator. I've been connecting the live lead from the ammeter to the bat. on the generator and a second lead from the ammeter to the A pole on the generator. Is that correct?

Thanks for the reply. There are four wires that lead from the ammeter/switch box. One goes to the headlights, one to the magneto and the other two to the generator/voltmeter. One of the wires sparks when it touches everything but the bat. terminal on the VR. The other I have attached to the A terminal on the VR. When I touch a wire from the bat. to gen. terminals on the VR with the tractor running the ammeter reads discharge. Otherwise there is no reading on the ammeter when the lights are on or the knob is set to high charge. What have I done wrong?

Barry, I better back up here cuz I have ABSOLUTELY NO WIRING DIAGRAMS FOR YOUR TRACTOR. From what your second post says, it sounds like you have a light switch type of Generator Field current control as they have low charge and high charge positions. On those the Generators Field post wires to the light switch NOT any VR. Most of those systems didnt use a Voltage Regulator but instead only had a 2 wire cutout relay with BAT and GEN terminals. HOWEVER, earlier from your post I had the impression you had a Voltage Regulator which has 3 terminals (BAT ARM FLD).

1) IF YOU HAVE A 2 WIRE CUTOUT RELAY: Ammeters LOAD side wires to its BAT terminal and its other GEN terminal wires to the ARM post on the Gen. Then the Gens Field post wires up to the light switch which has a low n high charge position and dead grounds the Field for high charge but grounds it thru a resistor for low charge.

2) IF YOU HAVE A 3 TERMINAL VOLTAGE REGULATOR; BAT up to ammeters load side,,,,, ,,Field to Gens Field post,,,,, ,ARM (or GEN) to Gens Armature post.

Regardless if a 2 wire cutout relay or a 3 wire VR, the BAT terminal must always show hot and be wired to the ammeters load terminal. Regardless if a relay or VR, if you dead ground the Gens Field post to case it ought to be in the high charge condition.

Sorry I have no AC diagrams so can only lay theory on you, no pin point wiring.

Barry, In order for an ammeter to accurately read the NET charge into or out of the battery, its hot SUPPLY terminal has BUT ONE wire and that leads to the hot ungrounded battery post often via the starter lug where the big battery cable is connected. HOWEVER its LOAD terminal is where all loads are fed (like lights n ignition via its feed to the switche(s) BAT input terminal, PLUS it connects to the BAT terminal on the Voltage Regulator. If the BAT terminal on the VR were wired over on the ammeters battery supply side, it wouldnt be reading the Generators output or its charging affect.
