My wd45 just abruptly started blowing antifreeze out of the radiator cap after it warms up. When I shut tractor off, I can hear coolant boiling in the upper hose. Thermostat is new. What could be the problem and what steps to I take to get to the cause.

I ran into the same problem last winter on a WD that i had just overhauled. I put in a new thermostat and every time she warmed up, she blew coolant out of the radiator without overheating. I took out the new thermostat and compared it to the old one and noticed that there was no vent hole(a small 1/8" hole in the flange of the thermostat). I drilled the hole in the new thermostat and reinstalled it and no more problem. The cooling system on those old girls fills from the bottom of the block up but if there is no where for the air to escape to the top of the radiator, she will get an air bubble behind the thermostat. Then the thermostat won't open until that air gets warm enough and by that time the water is way to hot and it causes a surge that overflows your radiator. Hope this helps.

Neil,
If there wasn't any overheating problems present before the new thermo, I would think the thermo is either stuck closed or defective. As one of the fellows mentioned, boil some water in a pan and toss the thermo in. If it doesn't open, there's yer' culprit!

I have seen new thermostats be bad. Put it in a pan of water and heat see if it is working. I know some thermostats can be put in backwards. Might be a bad radiator cap. And it could be as simple as overfilling. That could cause the radiator will cause anti freeze to pressure up and come out the overflow. I think I would check these simple things before I did anything elese to the system.

May be a BAD, new thermostat..!!

Put it in a pan of water with a thermometer and see at what temp it opens..if it does at all...!!

Sounds like a cloged up system. I'd do a flush of the system. Drain it when cold, fill with vinagar and run till hot, let cool and drain and flush with a garden hose and then refill with antifreeze
