We have a 53 ca that the hand clutch works just fine when you pull it back to stop the tractor, but it slips under load such as going up a hill. I checked the adjustment procedure and it says you need a .005 cleareance between the adjustment gear and the release bearing. This one has no cleareance at all. Could I just try and back that out to get the right clearance or is this a worse problem? Thanks,Scott

The adjusting hub is in this assembly for that very reason. The hub may be hard (to impossible) to adjust when there is no clearance. You may have to partially remove the axel so you can adjust the hub (turn it). The book says to back it all the way out and then adjust it to the correct clearance after assembly. I have exploded views if you need them.
