I have a 6 volt regulator to replace the cut out on my tractor. There was no instructions to wire up the regulator to the existing wiring. Can someone explain the wiring setup. Also under this regulator there appears to be a ground terminal. What is this terminal for or does it have a use. Since this regulator is the resitor replacement as I understand it do I still hook up the number 2 wire on the old dash resistor to the field on the regulator or field on the generator.

Bill, a full fledged 3 wire (BAT ARM FLD) Voltage Regulator is intended to replace BOTH the 2 wire cutout relay PLUS any light switch type of field current control resistors. Therefore, when using it DO NOT RUN ANY WIRES from the Gens Field post up to any light switch. Wire it:

BAT up to the load (NOT to battery) side of ammeter. Same side that feeds light or ignition switches. Same place the wire to the BAT side of the old cutout relay wired. The old wire would suffice.

ARM (or GEN) on VR to Gens Arm post. Same place the GEN side of the old relay was attached

FLD on VR to Gens Field post.

Im a John Deere guy just cruising here so Im unsure if your generator is a 2 or 3 brush, but if its an adjustable three brush type I would set it to max charge if replacing a light switch type field current control with a full fledged VR. If it has a grounding terminal attach it to the Gens case and make sure the gen also has a good ground to the tractors frame.
